A Mississippi Mystery
Submitted by rodman on Thu, 09/17/2009 - 18:18A large and gracious riverfront mansion, a Southern Socialite, and all the signs of a violence. Jaqueline Levitz was a furniture heiress. Her sister, Gerri Brown, says she was a wonderful person who was very kind, beautiful and lived a life of luxury for the past 25 years. People would have noticed her and known that she was rich and living alone. In the late afternoon of November 18th 1995, 62 year old jaqueline picked up wallpaper samples for her new home. Her family and friends never saw her again. She would usually call every day but the weekend she went missing she didn't call. Her Brother-In-Law decided to go to the house and check on her. Her Jaguar was parked in the driveway and the front door was open. He went inside and found signs of a violent struggle. And Jaqueline Levitz was gone. He called the police and all the family members knew that something was wrong.
There were several broken fake fingernails scattered on the floor. A mattress in the bedroom was blood soaked. Police were confounded. The clues didn't make sense. She was an easy target for someone who may have wanted to rob her or collect a ransom after kidnapping her but there has never been a ransom demand. And there was a huge pair of diamond earrings was left at the scene so it appears robbery wasn't a motive either. The home had not been plundered in any way. The police feel that they are probably dealing with someone who has committed a compulsive act and realized that it would be easily detected if the body were found, so he, she, or they got rid of it. Where no one knows. Police searched the area with bloodhounds and a helicopter to no avail. They also searched the did river because of the closeness of the house to the river and again found nothing.
They brought in specially trained cadaver dogs and other canine teams, all without success. The police and the family continue to search for answers in vain. The lead detective says you never know when you are interviewing someone that something that they think might seem insignificant could be a vital piece of information needed to crack the case. In February 2001, five years after the disappearance, the search was called off and Jaqueline Levitx was declared legally dead. The family had a memorial service and other than that there has been no closure for them. It remains on of Mississipi's greatest mysterys.
